Reason why we should breathe through the nose and not through the mouth

The normal passage of air to the lower respiratory tract starts from the nose and continues through the trachea until it reaches the lungs. Nature has “programmed” the human body so that, when inhaling, the air that enters through our nose:

Pass through the nasal mucosa at a temperature similar to that of our body, that is, around 37 degrees Celsius.

Filter, through the nasal epithelium, those foreign particles that can be trapped with the air in the breathing process.

Thanks to the presence of some enzymes in the nasal mucosa, it is possible to sterilize the air. That is, keep the clean air in the lower respiratory tract.

Disadvantages of breathing through the mouth

When breathing is done through the mouth, it is logical that we are forced to keep it open. However, as the mucosa of the oral cavity is not created with this function, the mouth dries out.

This is the reason why many people wake up with dry mouth or throat during the night and need to drink water. On the other hand, the air is not filtered, the particles enter and contaminate the respiratory tract, since it does not enter through the nose to be filtered or sterilized conveniently. The latter can lead to infectious respiratory diseases.
